Activity
Rolling and un-rolling a mat.
Materials
A mat.
Purpose
In order to be able to set up a working space on the floor in the classroom the child must know where to find a mat, be able to roll and un-roll the mat correctly and return it when they have completed the exercise.
Presentation
- The teacher shows the child where the mats are kept.
- The teacher asks the child to take a mat and find a free floor space in the classroom. Tell the child that you are going to give them a presentation on how to roll and unroll a mat.
- The teacher takes the mat and holding it directly in front with one hand gripping the nearest edge use the other hand to gently push open the rolled floor mat.
- Starting from the nearest edge and gripping the mat firmly with both hands begin to roll up the mat in a tight fashion.
- Once the mat has been completely rolled up stand it on an edge and with a gentle tapping motion on the floor make sure the edges are straight.
- Ask the child if they would like to try. Allow the child to roll and unroll the mat as often as as they like.
- Once the activity is completed get the child to return the mat to it’s stand or basket.
